Some miscellaneous events in December

I can't remember if I mentioned it in my post about Mama and Ryan's birthday dinner, but the gift that our family gave to Ryan was a set of cookie cutters, decorating icing tubes, and a round tupperware box.  The deeper implication of the gift was that he was invited to our house to bake and decorate cookies.  He had a great time doing that.

We have found an alternative way to get to Dallas besides driving: take the Amtrak train!  Juli and Laurie went up to Dallas the Monday before Christmas, because Juli had bought tickets to attend a Messiah sing-along that Tuesday night.  The only driving involved is taking the passengers to the train station, but then we still get to have the car at home.  :-)  I was the chauffeur and (nonprofessional) photographer.

One of the things that Heidi planted in the garden earlier in 2009 was carrots.  They dutifully grew, bushier and bushier above the ground each day, until Juli decided that they would be part of our Christmas dinner.  Heidi was so proud to go out and harvest them.  Then she got to wash them and cut off the tops.

One of our family's traditions on Christmas day is to read the story of Christ's birth, from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, and having the younger members construct the nativity scene as each new group of people is introduced.  This year Debra and I read, while Gretchen, Reagan and Heidi arranged our olive wood nativity set on the half-wall.

Laurie got a creative bee in her bonnet after seeing some silk that Juli had cut off a dress that she altered for a customer.  We have basic doll dress patterns, but of course Laurie wasn't content to just follow the directions.  :-)  She created her own dress based off of the pattern.  Though I can't remember from which time period the design came, the finished project was quite amazing.  Good job, Laurie!

The last week of December Uncle James and Aunt Zarella went on a road trip.  They couldn't leave their dog home for that long, so they asked if we could "dog-sit" Mocha (their dog) for them.  The youngs finally got a taste of what it's like to care for a dog!
